About the project:
Creating a prototype to allow people in wheelchairs more easily open and travel through doors
Most buildings are not equipped with automatic door openers. While this offers the ideal solution for for people in wheelchairs, it is not widely available and would be expensive and impractical to add to many locations. Instead, an easier way for people in wheelchairs to travel through doors would help make them more independent now.
The current prototype can be hung on door knobs to prop open the door while a person in a wheelchair backs up and travels through the door. A second prototype is being developed to allow a person in a wheelchair to open and move through a door that opens towards them. The ultimate goal is to combine both functions into a single device that is convenient to carry at all times.
